Exploring the relationship between imperialism and feminism in the late 19th century, Caroline Eichner demonstrates the complexity of conceptualizing "pro-imperialist" and "anti-imperialist" positions as binary concepts.

Tracing the intellectual and spatial trajectory of early French feminists through their writings, public speeches, and publishing activities, the researcher demonstrates their opposition to imperial models while simultaneously exploiting them.
As among the first anti-imperialists of their time, French feminists were entangled in the hierarchies and epistemologies of empire. Appealing to concepts of inclusion and exclusion and the "nature" of race, they compared the position of women to the oppression of colonized peoples. Feminists faced similar barriers to full participation and integration into society. The system assumed citizenship was the prerogative of men, relegating women to the role of outsiders.
