The novel's hero, journalist Louis, tired of his job and, most importantly, of his family life, comes to a convention in Austin (Texas) and meets a woman there who fills his life with new meaning. Louis always dreamed of experiencing, at least occasionally, "perfect days" marked by extreme acuity of feelings and boundless freedom. He used the letters of W. Faulkner, which he accidentally found in the Austin University archive, as an example. It is precisely these "perfect days" that Faulkner tries to restore, addressing his beloved Meta Carpenter. But can happiness and love be long-lasting? How can boredom and everyday routine prevent them from being destroyed? Bergareche considers these questions to be eternal and therefore does not try to give unambiguous answers to them. Nevertheless, the hero shares with readers some recipes drawn from his own life experience.
