Yalka Simonov is an ordinary guy, except for the fact that he is a representative of the Nuoli, an ancient northern people. Nuoli bodies are covered with thick hair, and instead of face they have an abyss, so the Nuoli are forced to wear special masks. Yalka lives in Rostov-on-Don, works in an office, dreams of making a career in stand-up (so far it turns out not so much) and generally feels like a loser. But Yalka knows perfectly well that he will never be able to merge with the surrounding landscape: he is too unlike the rest. However, the culture of Nuoli Yalka is becoming increasingly distant. The only ritual that he strictly performs is bathing in cold water (no matter in the bath or river): this gives him strength. Hoping to understand something about himself, Yalka enrolls in stage courses; in parallel with this new hobby, he falls in love with a colleague - Natalie, but will she reciprocate him? And what about Elina, a nuoli girl who seems to be about to marry him? And most importantly, what to do with yourself?

How do you find yourself when you are with you every day? ?

“Yalka” is an atmospheric novel about finding oneself in the scenery of a colorful southern city, which in a new way builds a conversation about national identity, about alienity and otherness in modern Russia.
Marina Chufistova is a writer who lives in Rostov-on-Don. Graduated from the literary workshop of Evgeny Babushkin. “Yalka” entered the long list of the award “Lyceum”.
