This work examines the travelogues of medieval Russian travelers (pilgrims, merchants, and diplomats)—the so-called "travels" or "journeys." Their unique accounts of Byzantium, Palestine, Egypt, Germany, Italy, and other overseas lands remain understudied in both Russian and foreign historiography.
This work represents the first comprehensive study of travelogues from the 12th–15th centuries. By analyzing each layer of information in these travelogues, new informational potentials are revealed and traditional approaches to their study are expanded. The history of the emergence and development of the travelogue genre and its manuscript tradition are examined. The primary focus is a specific analysis of the entire body of available information on medieval travelers, including the communication routes between Medieval Rus' and the Black Sea and Caspian regions, as well as the countries of the East and West (the reconstruction of Russian travelers' routes is of independent significance). New approaches to studying the worldviews of other faiths, peoples, and countries are proposed; the evolution of the worldview of Christian shrines in the consciousness of Russian Orthodox people over more than three centuries is traced.
