The Khazar Dictionary is one of the most unusual works of world literature of our time, going beyond the traditional linear narrative and approaching electronic hypertext. Milorad Pavic called the Khazar Dictionary a survival textbook. This “novel lexicon” consists of three cross-referenced mythologized stories that often contradict each other. And each is based on one of the main Abrahamic religions - Christianity, Islam, Judaism. Between these millstones is the fate of the people, broken into small fragments. From these fragments one can construct thousands of different plots, and this is proposed to the reader, who “will put his book into one whole, as in a game of dominoes or cards, and will get from this dictionary, as from a mirror, as much as he puts into it, because from the truth ... you can not get more than you put into it.” So this book can also be a manual on self-knowledge – or just a refined and witty game of meaning.
The novel exists in two versions, male and female, differing only in one paragraph (this edition presents the male).
