Two hundred years ago, Britain lost the war with Napoleon and, along with the rest of conquered Europe, became part of the French Empire. Only recently, after a long campaign of civil disobedience, did the country regain its independence, giving birth to the British Socialist Republic. London is now connected to the mainland by the English Channel railway bridge; a short train journey brings you to Paris, the largest and most glamorous city in the world, also known as Granville ("the great city").
And so, from Granville, emissaries of the "Napoleon of the criminal underworld," the enigmatic Tiberius Koenig, set out for London. Having subjugated all the Parisian gangs and built an empire of violence and corruption, he now sets his sights on London. Only Detective Inspector LeBrock of Scotland Yard, a protégé of the legendary Stamford Hawksmoor and renowned for his truly badger-like tenacity, can stand in his way. After all, Le Brock is none other than a badger, and the world of "Granville" is populated predominantly by anthropomorphic animals, while humans ("test-faces") perform the most menial labor and are deprived of civil rights...
For the first time in Russian—a masterpiece of modern steampunk, a finalist for the Hugo Award (2013) and winner of the French Prix ActuSF de l'Uchronie (2025), awarded for the best works in the alternative history genre.
