"Mountains of the Sea and Giants" is a visionary novel by Alfred Döblin (1878-1957), written in 1924 and unlike any other later science fiction novel. It tells of a world war on the Russian Plain, the conquest of Icelandic volcanoes and the thawing of Greenland, the invasion of prehistoric monsters across Europe, and the migrations of ethnically diverse migrant groups across what is now France...

According to Günter Grass, this prose was written "as if under the overwhelming pressure of the visions that overwhelmed the author." Furthermore, Döblin's book is "an experiment in language and narrative technique; an extreme and unique text both for Döblin himself and for the entire history of German literature" (Gabriela Sander), "one of the most unheard-of, most outlandish novels of the 20th century" (Klaus Modick).
