This expressionist novel, conceived by Hans Henny Jann in exile in Norway during World War I, tells the story of Perrudja, who grew up alone in the mountains and is financially supported by a mysterious patron. Perrudja tells him of his past—a past whose fragments he seeks to recapture. But his patron compels him to devote himself to a greater plan: a plan for the renewal of humanity, one that will change the world for the better and bring peace to humanity.
"Perrudja" tells a vivid story of the demons that plague humans, of confusion and decline, and also of redemption. Of colonial wars and poisonous gases. Of this world as such. Of its manifestations—where it becomes fraternal and gentle—of the landscape, of the elements, of the effects of matter. Anecdotes and lists, song refrains, medical diagnoses, ancient sayings, culinary recipes, obscenities, legends; The names of precious stones, the names of Spanish generals, the designations of various types of meat, vegetables, preserves, Pacific islands, animal species, and technical devices swirl and chase each other in "Perrudia."
Yann himself said of this novel: "I had never met a normal person, so I couldn't portray one. I was striving for one positive achievement—the acceptance of existence."
This book is intoxicatingly intelligent, its criticism as rigorous as Judgment Day. However, Yann's soul proved strong enough to find a path to acceptance of existence beyond separation.
The second volume contains commentary on the novel "Perrudia," photo commentary, and an appendix.
Compiler, translator, commentary, and article author: Tatyana Baskakova.
