The new novel by American writer Ann Patchett resembles a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, which has grown to the scale of a family epic. The story of the main characters, Danny Conroy and his sister Maeve, covers the entire second half of the twentieth century, and their fates are fate is fatefully intertwined with the Dutch House - a mansion in eastern Pennsylvania, once belonged to the ruined dynasty of Dutch tycoons Vanhubeykov. The Dutch House itself is not haunted, but everyone who crosses its threshold becomes, in a sense, a ghost of the house - wherever he goes, wherever he lives, he carries that image with him everywhere. Danny and Maeve have just that: an untimely departed father, a mother long ago turned into a memory, a stepmother who seems to have emerged from a nightmare, and an ominous family mansion. And also adult life, which still will not begin: the curse of childhood, the seal of orphanhood, the impossibility of breaking once formed bonds. "Dutch House" is a story about the victory of love over evil. Victory, mixed with losses and in many ways unobvious, because in the end the reader has to figure out for himself, whose side he is on and whether there was a villain. And if there was, who was it?
