The publication is timed to coincide with the 170th anniversary of the birth of the first Prime Minister of the Russian Empire, Count Sergei Yulievich Witte (1849-1915), who was one of the "fathers" of the Russian Constitution. The book presents and comments on 270 caricatures of Witte, selected from Russian satirical magazines of 1905-1908 - the period of the First Russian Revolution. These years were characterized by a boom of satirical magazines unprecedented in Russian history, which appeared throughout the country despite censorship bans, confiscations, and repression. Turning to satirical graphics gives the reader a unique opportunity to look at Russian society, which had just undergone a colossal transformation: for the first time in the country's history, broad sections of the population were involved in discussing the activities of the government, the highest officials of the empire, and even the emperor himself. Often these caricature images determined both the political life of Prime Minister S. Y. Witte and the public's attitude to the actions of his government. The materials of satirical publications devoted to the figure of Witte, a little-studied but valuable layer of visual historiography, are introduced for the first time. Contributing author E. O.
