A collection of short stories by Japanese-German writer Yoko Tawada, named the Times Literary Supplement's Book of the Year in 2005. The narrator finds herself in such diverse geographies as Japan, Russia (Siberia, Moscow), and Germany, describing a fragmented world where even a city or a human body can become a kind of text. The reader feels as much an outsider as the author and the characters in these stories: the ghost of a burned woman, a traveler on the Trans-Siberian Railway, a mechanical doll, language, and a monk who becomes his own reflection. The book presents stories from various collections of the author, translated into Russian for the first time from Japanese and German.
