Vasily Stepanovich Tsymbal (1906–1980) fought as a private from the beginning of the Great Patriotic War until its end — first in a fighter battalion, then in a partisan detachment, then in a cavalry division, and finally as a signalman on the Leningrad Front. His regiment reached Königsberg, after which it was redeployed to the Far East, where it fought in the war with Japan. Many of his contemporaries had a similar fate, but, unlike them, Tsymbal kept a diary all these years. Despite the fact that it was strictly forbidden at the front and, if discovered, the author was threatened with a marching company, a penal battalion, or even execution, he wrote down observations of what was happening, the texts of letters received and sent, poems of his own composition, and also pasted in photographs — his own and those of his friends at the front. His diary gives the reader the opportunity to immerse himself in the military atmosphere, to learn from a participant in the events the “trench truth” about the difficulties of war and various aspects of military life, about the thoughts and feelings of soldiers, their longing for home and loved ones, about their attitude towards the enemy.
The diary was prepared for publication by E. V. Tsymbal, the son of V. S. Tsymbal.
