"Fragments of a Lover's Speech" made Roland Barthes famous: after this book was published in 1977, the semiotic theorist was seen as a new pop star. He was invited to appear on TV shows alongside Françoise Sagan and Anna Golon (co-author of the novels about "Angelique"), and interviews with him appeared in mainstream magazines like Playboy (which Barthes had once mocked in his book "Mythologies") and Elle. The reason for this success is the obvious for all readers closeness of "Fragments" to a work of fiction with its own characters and plot. In this way, the book of the critic and theorist on the speech of lovers becomes an example of love speech itself.
The present edition is supplemented by materials from Roland Barthes' seminars at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris), published in 2007 under the title "Love Speech".
