An unfinished chess game in a painting by a Flemish artist and a mysterious inscription found on it under a layer of paint become the key to the investigation of brutal murders that take place in our days. Each of the novel's characters becomes a chess piece that participates in the devil's game unfolding around them. And the silent drama reflected in the picture gets a strange continuation several centuries later. Painting and math, logic and history are put in the service of a precise, perfectly worked out plot from the world of collectors and antique dealers. The action takes the characters into the past and makes them discover that time has no power over human passions. And, unlike chess, in reality "nothing is only black or white": good easily turns to evil, and the victim to the executioner.
