Early 20th century, Punjab. Fifteen-year-old Mehar and her named sisters Gurleen and Harbans were married off in the same ceremony. They now hide from prying eyes in a modest porcelain room off to the side of the house. Following tradition, wives are supposed to stay in the shadows. Forget about personal space, work without asking unnecessary questions, honor the overbearing mother-in-law more than their mother, and the whims of their elders more than their own desires. The girls do not even know which of the three brothers each of them got as a husband. Only after giving birth to a son do they hope one day to find their voice. Many years later, a young man who grew up in a small English town comes to India. As a pampered visitor, he cautiously explores the places where his ancestors lived. Everything in the abandoned ancestral manor seems strange and alien to him... Except for the locked porcelain room. In it he discovers a hidden history of strict regulations and direct prohibitions, courageous love and attempts to change the old world.
