Early 20th century, Punjab. Fifteen-year-old Mehar and her adopted sisters, Gurleen and Harbans, are married in a single ceremony. Now they hide from prying eyes in a modest porcelain room located off to the side of the house. Following tradition, wives are expected to remain in the shadows. They must abandon personal space, work without asking unnecessary questions, respect their overbearing mother-in-law more than their mother, and honor the whims of their elders more than their own desires. The girls don't even know which of their three brothers each has been given as a husband. Only by giving birth to a son do they hope to one day find their voice.

Many years later, a young man raised in a small English town arrives in India. Like a spoiled guest, he cautiously explores the places where his ancestors lived. In the abandoned family estate, everything seems strange and alien to him... Except for the locked porcelain room. In it, he will reveal a secret story, composed of strict prescriptions and direct prohibitions, bold love and attempts to change the old world.
