Poland has been under German occupation for four years now. Dr. Twardowski, a physician from Vilnius, who has already lost his two older sons in the war, takes his youngest, 14-year-old Janek, into the forest, where he has dug a dugout for him in advance. His father promises to visit Janek every few days. More than a week passes, his father does not appear, and Janek understands that something terrible has happened. On his father’s advice, he sets off to wander through the forest, hoping to find partisans, and indeed meets a group of “greens,” as the locals call them. In the detachment, he meets a scout named Zosia, who, despite her young age, has managed to survive many tragedies. The partisans fight not only against the occupiers, but also against hunger and cold, and in the evenings they listen to Adam Dobranski, a recent student, read them excerpts from his manuscript entitled “European Education,” in which he discusses the future of a free Europe.
