Poet, philosopher, and traveler Victor Segalen (1878–1919) had a significant impact on our understanding of cultural diversity. In "Essay on Exotism," he formulates a distinctive conception of the world and reflects on the perception of otherness. Rejecting tourism and colonialism as the most common methods of interacting with non-Western civilizations and cultures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the author seeks an answer to the question: is it possible to truly understand the Other through direct sensory experience? This diary of reflections became one of the first texts to critique globalization, and Segalen's ideas formed the foundation of modern research approaches in ethnology.
