The diary of Heinz Kieler is another valuable document that bears witness to the everyday life at the front during World War II. Corporal Heinz Kieler served as a medical orderly in a German military hospital. He began his diary in September 1941, when German troops were close to Moscow. Day after day, Kieler looked after the wounded, observing bloody wounds, death, illness and hunger. A peaceful man at heart, he was increasingly filled with disgust for the war, for how it destroys the souls and lives of those who were drawn into it, one way or another. He could not understand why people were forced to kill each other, and he said to himself: “We must strive not to conquer the world, but to serve it.”
