This book is dedicated to one of the key figures in French national history, as well as in the history of the Western European Middle Ages as a whole: Joan of Arc. For the first time in world historiography, it examines the development of the myth of the Saintly Maid of Orleans over nearly five centuries: from her appearance on the historical stage in 1429 until the turn of the 20th century. This study of Joan of Arc's transformation into a national saint, which combined her "real" and mythologized histories, aims to reveal both the characteristics of Western European political culture in the late Middle Ages and the modern era, as well as the development of the concept of holiness in the 15th-19th centuries.

The work is based on a large body of sources: trial materials, theological and legal treatises, and 15th-century chronicles. and historical works of the 16th-18th centuries, works of art, materials on local veneration of Joan of Arc in Orleans in the 15th-19th centuries, and works of French historians of the 19th century.
