The English scholar of Renaissance culture, Frances A. Yates (1899–1981), was a member of the brilliant scholarly community known as the Warburg Institute. Her book, "Giordano Bruno…" (1964), is the first in a series of celebrated works by Yates that provided a completely new understanding of the logic of the development of European culture in the early modern period.

Frances A. Yates can rightfully be called one of the first academic researchers of Western esotericism to examine marginal religiosity from the perspective of classical rationalism. Her research focuses on the proposition that the Hermetic, or Hermetic-Kabbalistic, tradition, with its freedom of inquiry and commitment to experimentation, paved the way for the scientific revolution.
