What can a careful examination of sources tell us about the fate of Fyodor Dostoevsky's legacy in the 20th century? Petr Druzhinin's book explores key milestones in the history of Dostoevsky scholarship: drawing on a large body of previously unknown materials, the author traces how attitudes toward the classic author and his texts changed over different periods. The study spans from the early post-revolutionary years, when the authorities were unable to formulate a clear position, through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, when Dostoevsky's legacy was subjected to harsh criticism, to his rehabilitation, albeit incomplete, during the Thaw. The stories collected in the book, supported by an extensive documentary appendix, combine to form both a fascinating source study detective story and a tragic story about the posthumous fate of a world classic.

Petr Druzhinin is a historian and senior researcher at the Vinogradov Institute of the Russian Language of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
