Biography of Alexei Viktorovich Shchusev (1873-1949), an outstanding architect of the twentieth century, fully reflected the history of the era in which the architect lived and worked. He suffered not only triumphs, but also hard trials, the most terrible of which was 1937. It was then that a public campaign was launched to defame Shchusev, which was bound to end with his arrest.
Historian Peter Druzhinin, a senior researcher at the Vinogradov Institute of Russian Language of the Russian Academy of Sciences, on the basis of various archival sources, restores the history of the Shchusev case, names not only those who fabricated it, but also those party leaders who sanctioned the public persecution of the architect. An unprecedented number of previously unknown documents reveals to the reader a broader picture of the life and work of Soviet architects in the 1930s: a frenzied struggle of ambition, sometimes intractable issues of authorship of architectural projects, the incredible complexity of relationships, jealousy and mutual hatred of masters of Soviet architecture.
