In 1940, torrential rains burst the dam on the Tuckaseegee River in North Carolina. Fourteen-year-old Wallis Ann Stamper and her family miraculously survived the flood, but their misfortunes did not end there: since their house was completely destroyed, they were left without a livelihood. Wallis Ann is left to care for her little brother Seth and older sister Lacey, who is unable to speak, although she has a rare gift for reproducing any music from memory. Unable to establish a household, the Stamper family goes nomadic from place to place in search of food... Thanks to Lacey's talent, they manage to get a job in a traveling circus, but new hardships await them there. However, despite everything, Wallis Ann does not lose the will to live... Will she be able to find love and freedom?
