The English statesman Samuel Pepys (1633–1703) had a brilliant political career and left behind diaries about the daily life of Londoners during the Restoration period, which demonstrated his extraordinary literary talent.

Samuel Pepys was a contemporary of such events as the execution of Charles I and the Restoration of the monarchy, the Great Fire of London and the plague epidemic, and he wrote about all of these events colorfully, vividly and passionately. With equal ease, Pepys talked about wars with Holland and about theatrical premieres, about service in the Admiralty and about carousing with friends, about quarrels with his wife and courtship of a servant.

His diary entries made up a cycle of eleven volumes, and this edition includes a selection of selected passages that will help readers get a complete picture of the everyday life, everyday life and customs of the most diverse strata of English society in the 17th century.
