Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) - an outstanding English poet, translator, illustrator and artist, one of the founders of the famous "Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood" - an association of poets who sought to return art to its pre-Raphaelite naive form, to aesthetic perfection and harmony, which was particularly clearly manifested in the works born by them.
The main literary achievement of D.G. Rossetti was the cycle "House of Life" of 101 sonnets, created throughout almost the entire creative path of the poet. The title of the collection reflects its specific content: the house of life for the poet is creativity, love, philosophy and nature, of which man is a part. In the sonnet form Rossetti saw an opportunity to embody the moment in all its fullness and originality. Each sonnet recreates a certain hour of the poet's life, mood, atmosphere, picture, which he considered worthy of immortalization. One of the main characters in the sonnets is Love, who appears at the intersection of erotic and spiritual - not an idealized "beautiful lady", but a woman of flesh and blood. Rossetti's sonnets are marked by vivid illustrative effects and an atmosphere of luxurious beauty, serving as perfect illustrations for his paintings. Since almost all of the sonnets echo Rossetti's paintings, and many of them are inseparable from their "pictorial counterparts," this pairing was the basis for the design of the present edition. In general, the pictorial series of Rossetti's paintings (more than 150 paintings) presented in the two-volume edition will provide a large-scale view of the creative path of the British genius. The scientifically commented translation of "The House of Life", as well as more than 60 other poems by Rossetti, which make up the "Supplements" section, was prepared by the largest Russian expert on the poet's work and a remarkable translator V.S. Neklyaev (pseudonym Vlanes). The edition is accompanied by detailed articles on the life of Rossetti (V.S. Neklyaev) and on the perception of his poetic heritage in Russia (D.N. Zhatkin). The edition was developed (in terms of design layout) and printed as a highly artistic one. For the production of the first book (a full-fledged pictorial album), special matte coated paper with triple coating (preventing the formation of light glare, which hinders reading) and printing with a very high raster linearity (making the raster grain practically invisible) were used.
