Welcome to Maple Street, a picturesque corner of Long Island suburbia, where the inhabitants lead a measured and decent life, believing that this will always be the case. Meanwhile, the world around them begins to change rapidly. The threat literally lurks underground. After moving to a respectable suburb of the Wilde family among neighbors begins a real Brownian movement. No wonder. Arlo, the father of the family, is a former rock star and drug addict. His wife Gertie has a strong Brooklyn accent and style problems. And the kids swear like sailors. These people don't exactly fit the image of the pious residents of Maple Street. Although the leader of the community, college professor Rhea Schroeder, initially warmly welcomed Gertie and her family, relations soured in an instant when the new neighbors got too frank over a glass of wine. Thus the Wildes rapidly became pariahs. As tensions on Maple Street escalate, a sinkhole forms in a nearby park, into which Rhea's daughter Shelley falls. The search for the girl ends with one mother accusing the other. Suddenly the entire local community turns against the Wyald family and threatens them with carnage. A gripping and caustic satire on the bourgeois inhabitants of an upscale American suburb, the novel is also about ostensible friendship and maternal solidarity, and the consequences that can await you when you don't fit in socially.
