The central place in the book is given to the battles of the Volunteer Army with the Red Army in the Donetsk Basin in the first half of 1919. It tells in detail about the peculiarities of the fighting, the attitude to the Whites on the part of the population, the use of tanks, etc. The book also contains a separate section of biographies of the Volunteer Army and the Red Army. A separate section of the book consists of Kelner's biographical sketches about the "marshals" of the Volunteer Army - Generals M.G.Drozdovsky, A.P.Kutepov, V.Z.May-May-Mayevsky, A.V.Turkul and others. An attempt to comprehend volunteerism as the basis of the White Movement is made by the author in the essay "Volunteers".
