This is an allegorical novel, a story about India that has gained independence and about the generation that was born in a free country. It is a myth, a parable, and a phantasmagoria, where the tragic and the comic, satire and pathos, adventure and drama are intertwined, a multi-layered narrative that tells about the life of the main character, Salem Sinai, and about the history of India and partly Pakistan from 1910 to 1976.

The novel "Midnight's Children" won the Booker Prize three times: in 1981 as the best novel, in 1993 and 2008 - for the 25th and 40th anniversaries of the prize as the best work of all those that received it.
