It all started with a lost letter that, 51 years later, found its addressee. Edith Burchill had never seen her mother so excited as when she opened the envelope and read the message from the past. This is how the girl learns about Milderhurst Castle, where three sisters lived, who sheltered her mother, then just a girl, during the evacuation. However, her mother does not want to talk about her life in the castle, and Edith feels that there is some mystery connected with it.
After a while, Edith by chance finds herself in the village of Milderhurst, where in a bookstore she sees a book that she has adored since childhood. The author of this book, the writer Raymond Blythe, once lived in this castle. And his three daughters - the same three sisters! - still live there. Edith realizes that fate gives her the opportunity to learn the secrets that the old castle hides, and the truth about what happened in the "distant hours" of the past...
