The Galvins seemed to be a model American family. The father was a military man, the mother a homemaker, and both were active in the public and social life of the state and country. Twelve children - ten boys and two girls - are the pride of the family, they are talented and show great promise. Suddenly the eldest son, a successful university student, is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Within a few years, five more Galvin sons are diagnosed with this serious illness. Then all hell breaks loose: it turns out that behind the ideal façade hid a far from ideal life: physical and sexual abuse, abusive behavior, drugs - but the parents, Don and Mimi, until the last turned a blind eye to what was happening. All of this inevitably leads to tragic consequences and the separation of family members. For several decades, scientists, psychiatrists and geneticists have been battling over the mystery of the Galvin family, putting forward a variety of hypotheses. But will they be able to find an answer and give hope to millions of people?
