China, 1958. Following the Great Leap Forward, the Great Famine hit the country, killing millions of people in three years. We find ourselves in a forced labor camp, where most of the prisoners are members of the intelligentsia.
The main characters have no names (at least, we don't know them), only nicknames that indicate their occupation - Scientist, Engineer, Musician, Writer. Escape from the camp is impossible, so there are no guards in it. However, the Child is watching everything that is happening. A man of an indeterminate age, he has compiled ten commandments for the prisoners, which they are obliged to strictly observe, especially the main one - "do not run away". As an incentive, the most compliant prisoners receive paper stars and red flowers from the Child, the required number of which will allow them to be released later. But is it worth leaving the camp when hunger is raging all around and there is no salvation outside?
