Xiaman Rapongan is a Taiwanese writer of the Tao people. In his novel Black Wings, the story of friendship and growing up of four boys is set against the backdrop of the vast expanse surrounding Orchid Island in the Pacific Ocean. For thousands of years, the Tao people have maintained a traditional way of life, treating sea creatures with reverence. They had a special reverence for their totem, the flying fish. But at the end of the 20th century, a new generation is faced with a choice: whether to adopt the modern lifestyle of Taiwan's ethnically and culturally alien population or to remain on Orchid Island and live according to the customs of their ancestors.
Xiaman Raponggang's debut novel, Black Wings, is one of the most vivid and distinctive novels of growing up in prose in the Chinese language. It was published in Taipei in 1998 and has won several literary awards, including the Wu Jo-lu Literary Award. The author explores the theme of the clash of two cultures and refers to his native Tao language, creating parallel dialogues in two languages. In this edition, the reader has the opportunity to get acquainted with the texts in the language of the indigenous Tao people for the first time: the dialogues are preserved in the author's spelling and given in phonetic transcription in Russian.
