"Across New Siberia" is a collection of travel notes by Japanese proletarian writer Miyamoto Yuriko (1899-1951), who left behind a rich, but now largely forgotten, literary legacy. In 1927, together with her Russian translator Yuasa Yoshiko, she traveled across the USSR for three years. Yuriko's essays are full of vivid impressions of Moscow and Leningrad, a journey along the Trans-Siberian Railway all the way to Vladivostok, as well as precise observations on the lives of Soviet citizens, the country's social structure, and the status of women and children in society. Comparing the USSR with bourgeois England, Yuriko seeks to convey to her Japanese readers the advantages of life under socialism. But today, her book is less an agitational appeal to her compatriots than an expressive travelogue reflecting the influence of the Soviet project on the minds and imaginations of foreign intellectuals of the first half of the 20th century.
