Varvara Fedorovna Stepanova (1894-1958) was a Soviet artist, graphic artist, designer, one of the first creators of constructivism and the “Amazon of the avant-garde”. Together with her husband Alexander Rodchenko, she worked on the design of exhibitions and performances, was the art director of a number of magazines, created models of fabrics and costumes. Stepanova’s works were exhibited together with the works of her outstanding contemporaries: Kandinsky, Tatlin, Malevich, Rozanova and Popova. But, in addition, she had a unique gift to accurately notice and record what is happening with her inherent sensitivity and insight. Stepanova’s diary notes, articles and reports of different years were collected in this book by Alexander Lavrentiev and Ekaterina Lavrentieva – her grandson and great-granddaughter. Thanks to these texts, we learn about how Soviet art developed in the first half of the XX century directly from the lips of a participant in those events who considered creativity a “miracle” and aspired to this “miracle” all her life.
