The arrival of the Hungarians (Magyars) in Western Europe at the turn of the 9th-10th centuries was an event that significantly changed the entire balance of power on the continent. It had a particularly strong impact on the Slavic tribes and the early states of the Western Slavs (especially the Great Moravian Principality). Up to the appearance of the work of the Russian Slavist K.Y. Grot (1881), the prevailing view in science was that the Magyar invasion was disastrous for them. However, K.J. Grot's study changed this view in many respects, showing that the Magyars, although they caused many disasters to the Slavs, played the role of a bulwark for the Western Slavs against the German Drang nach Osten - "March to the East".
