Today it is commonplace for us to see ourselves and others in photographs, but what was the attitude at a time when photography was a relatively young art form? What did people expect to see in their photographic portraits and what was the purpose of being photographed? How did photography help express individuality and how did it reflect norms of public behavior? What did old photographs tell their contemporaries about the nature of body and soul? And what do pictures of South American Indians, madmen and women of easy virtue have in common?
Alexandra Yurgeneva's book analyzes photographs of the second half of the XIX century, which depict people who belonged to different social groups and spheres of activity. The author seeks to trace the formation of self-identification of the European of this period and the construction of his relationship with his own body.
By comparing the representation of corporeality in photographs with different functional load, the researcher shows how the human body became a point of intersection and collision between the spheres of public and private. Alexandra Yurgeneva is a candidate of cultural studies, senior researcher at the Artistic Problems of Mass Media Sector of the State Institute of Culture.
