How did notions of the body change during the Thaw—and what does photography reveal? How did Khrushchev and Eisenhower appear through the lens of the era? How was the Soviet space odyssey shaped in the pages of periodicals? Ekaterina Vikulina examines bodily norms related to work, health, age, gender, and ethnicity using materials from the magazines Ogonyok, Sovetskoye Foto, Zdorovye, Fizkultura i Sport, and other publications.

Photographs from the 1950s and 1960s reflect two transformations at once: the visual language associated with the body, and the ideology and culture of Soviet society. This book focuses on the representation of power, heroic and everyday bodies, nudity, and the trauma of war.

Ekaterina Vikulina is a cultural scholar, art historian, and specialist in Soviet visual culture.
