Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset (1883–1955) is among the most prominent thinkers of the 20th century, whose legacy has yet to be fully appreciated. Ortega's beloved essay genre allowed him to address a wide range of issues: he wrote on everything from politics and history to literary theory and the philosophy of science, and he predicted consumer society and the creation of the European Union.

Ortega's rational vitalism declared human existence-with-things to be the only reality: "I am 'I' and my circumstances."

This collection includes works that outline what might be called Ortega's philosophical anthropology. In addition to major works—"Spineless Spain," "Reflections on Technology," and "Man and Men"—it also contains several short essays, translated into Russian for the first time.

The book is addressed to readers interested in philosophy, cultural studies, the history of European thought, and the problems of contemporary society.
