"Chagin" - a novel about memory, time and a man who is tormented by these forces beyond his control. Time and memory are Vodolazkin's favorite themes: all his novels, from "The Laurel" to "The Justification of the Island," are devoted to them to a greater or lesser extent. In "Chagin" the writer reveals a new facet of this theme, personifying memory in the image of a man. Isidor Chagin, an archivist and employee of the City Library of St. Petersburg, has a unique gift of a mnemonist. His memory is like a camera: once having seen or heard a text, Chagin remembers it forever. He is easily given languages, large amounts of text and series of numbers, as well as facts and events - as really happened to him, and described by someone else. The gift predetermines his role: he is a mediator between imperfect human nature and the elemental force of time, but at the same time a brave knight who tries to wrest events and names from oblivion, to bring them back to the present. But even such talent has its downside. Isidore is unable to forget anything, cannot separate what really happened to him from fiction, and his own experience from someone else's. How can a man who forgets nothing live in a world in which everything is doomed to oblivion? This is the author's question.
