The complete edition of the diaries of Tsesarevich Alexander Alexandrovich (from March 1881 - Emperor Alexander III) includes entries from May 1865 to July 1870. Their value lies in the fact that the Grand Duke not only made daily notes on events, meetings, trips, but also diligently wrote about his reflections and personal experiences, making an attempt to understand himself or evaluating the people around him.
The diaries allow us to see the inner world of Alexander Alexandrovich, for whom the death of his elder brother, Grand Duke Nicholas Alexandrovich, in April 1865 was a complete surprise and a great personal loss - and elevated him to heir to the throne of the Russian Empire. Being in complete confusion, realizing the low level of his knowledge and unpreparedness to meet the new status, he began to study hard with the best teachers, gradually immersing himself in state activity.
