This textbook contains a condensed summary of the contents of the Department of General History's special course, "Church, Society, and Culture in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages," as well as the Department of Russian History's special course, "Slavic Epigraphy." The materials are intended to introduce students to current issues in the history of early Christianity and medieval studies. Particular attention is paid to the development of the hierarchical structure of the Early Church, theological controversies (Christological debates and Greco-Latin church relations), the history of education (both in the Latin West and in Byzantium), everyday life in medieval towns and villages, and epigraphic sources on the history of medieval Rus'.
