The figure of the gallery's world-famous founder strangely lurks in the shadow of his creation. Books, articles, and television programs devoted to Tretyakov passionately chronicle the artists he patronized, the paintings he acquired, and how the Tretyakov Gallery continued to exist after its founder's death. Despite the abundance of literature devoted to P.M. Tretyakov, it seems as if an unknown artist sketched his image with light strokes, almost took up the paint, but never completed the painting, never imbued it with the vibrant colors of his individuality, never infused it with the divine spark of his soul. Of course, when discussing Tretyakov, one cannot ignore what represented his life's purpose—the creation of a collection of paintings on Lavrushinsky Lane. However, the author sees his primary goal as drawing on documentary evidence to reveal to the reader the multifaceted personality that was Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov.
