The book centers on the life of Ivan Dmitrievich Sytin. Beginning as a "boy" in a bookstore, he founded the largest book enterprise in Russian history, the I.D. Sytin Partnership, which before the Revolution published nearly a quarter of all books published in the country and the most popular newspaper, Russkoye Slovo, with a circulation of up to 1 million copies.
Initially intended for the "people's reader," Sytin's publications were widely available and of high quality, as their authors included prominent figures in pedagogical science, renowned scholars, and popularizers.
Sytin also managed to attract prominent figures of Russian literature to contribute to his publications, many of whom he established friendships with (L.N. Tolstoy, A.P. Chekhov, A.I. Ertel, I.A. Bunin, M. Gorky, and others). This book devotes considerable space to these figures, as does the history of the development of Sytin's firm. Sytin's circle of friends is also described in such detail for the first time.
The first edition of this book was published twenty years ago in an abridged form. Now the monograph has been significantly expanded, including the inclusion of previously unknown material.
