This book is like a hand-painted scroll depicting history in scenes. In kimonos, sandals, long black hair, and dreams of a better life, Japanese women board a steamship to San Francisco. There their husbands, whom they have seen only once in a photograph, are waiting for them. And then there is the nostalgia for their homeland, the need, the hard labor in the fields or laundries, the tireless care of their children, the squeamishness of the whites, and the deportation to internment camps as the war begins. Otsuka tells the story of all the women at once, using the plural and turning the sum of all these lives into a heartbreaking human tragedy that symbolizes exile and collective deception. The incredible chorus of storytellers seem to speak in poems that are filled with strong emotion, life truth and wisdom.
