The birth of the British armored cruisers - the defenders of trade - was due to the growing number of such ships in their potential adversaries and, above all, in France. The nine armored cruisers of the Duke of Edinburgh, Warrior and Minotaur types laid down to counterbalance them were fast, armed with rapid-firing 9.2-dm turret artillery and carried good armor, including full waterline protection. All these cruisers could have been strong opponents of the French "classmates".
However, ironically, numerous French armored cruisers with the signing of the Anglo-French Treaty of "Cordial Concord" were transferred to the category of allies, and had to fight with the Germans, and not in the role they were supposed to play according to the plan of their main builder Philip Watts. Put in line battles, of course, they could not compete on equal terms with the dreadnoughts and only multiplied the unenviable fate of all ships, used not for their intended purpose. The "Black Prince", "Defiance" and "Warrior" perished at the Battle of Jutland, the first two with their entire crew, the "Natal" exploded from an internal explosion and the "Cochrane" was lost in a shipwreck. Their time quickly passed and they were replaced by line cruisers, not comparable to them in terms of armament and speed.
