After a ten-year break in the construction of cruisers, which had an armored belt along the waterline, the British Admiralty in the framework of the program 1897-1898 fiscal years ordered a series of ten almost identical armored cruisers. Taking as a model armored deck cruisers of the type "Diadem", strengthening in the new project artillery and installing an armored belt along the waterline, the Admiralty received a new type of large cruiser of the 1st class. The presence of side armor was made possible by the appearance of armor made of hard Krupp steel, which allowed to protect a relatively large area of the side without increasing the thickness of the armor.
The 12,000-ton displacement cruisers of the "Cressy" and "Drake" types were designed specifically for service on overseas stations and were notable for their speed and strong armament. All took part in the First World War. A tragic fate befell "Aboukir", "Cressy" and "Hoge". They were sunk on the same day by the German submarine U-9. Of their 2,296 crewmen, 62 officers and 1,397 sailors perished. "Good Hope" died with the entire crew at the beginning of the war in battle with the ships of Admiral M. Spee's squadron, and the "Drake" at the end of the war sunk the German submarine U-79.
