The most feared naval weapon of the First World War, the German submarines sank a huge number of merchant ships and warships. They ploughed the oceans in search of prey and could sink huge ships dozens of times larger than themselves, attacking them with their deck guns and torpedoes.
During the years of the First World War, German cruiser boats underwent a great evolution. Their displacement increased from 500 tons on the U-5 built in 1911 to 1200 tons on the U-160, which entered service in 1917. The design and contours of their hulls were changed, which led to an increase in seaworthiness.
By 1917, German boats had sunk up to 30% of all merchant ships in the world. In total, during the war, German submarines carried out 3,274 combat missions, during which 6,394 civilian ships with a total displacement of 11,948,792 tons were sunk (as well as about 100 warships with a displacement of 366,249 tons). A significant contribution to these colossal achievements of the war at sea was also made by the boats of the mobilization series Ms- (Mobilization), whose actions are presented in this book. At the end of the war, the construction of German submarines was completed. But 15 years later, their construction was resumed. But on a much larger scale.
