The gradual improvement of mechanical engineering made it possible to install more powerful armament on German ships with the same displacement and slightly higher speed.

The first types of German cruisers were similar to squadron battleships. Later types, such as the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, had a higher speed due to weaker and more extended armor and a reduction in the caliber of the main artillery. Then the Main Directorate of the Kaiser's Navy and the Minister of the Navy Tirpitz were faced with a difficult decision. Almost immediately it became clear that the last armored cruiser, the Blucher, was significantly inferior in combat capabilities to the Invincible, armed with 305 mm guns, which was only 1,800 tons larger. The arrangement of the armor and armament on them remained basically the same as on the battleships.

All three of the last German armored cruisers suffered the same fate - they perished in battles with ships of the new dreadnought type.
