The Brandenburg-class battleships, commissioned in the 1890s, were the first German squadron battleships and served as the beginning of the creation of the High Seas Fleet – the main fleet of the Kaiser's Navy, which created a constant threat to the British Isles. With a moderate displacement, the Brandenburgs harmoniously combined good seaworthiness, speed and artillery that was effective for their time. A total of four such battleships were built, but contrary to German naval tradition, the series was named in honor of the second ship launched, and not in honor of the first – "Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm". The Brandenburgs received their baptism of fire in Chinese waters during the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion. The Kurfürst and Weissenburg, sold to the Ottoman Empire, took part in battles with the Greek fleet at Elli and Lemnos during the First Balkan War of 1912–1913. All ships of the series participated in World War I. Hayreddin Barbarossa (as the Turks called the Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm) was sunk by a British submarine during the Dardanelles operation, and Torgut Reis (former Weissenburg), the last of the Brandenburgs, served in the Turkish fleet until the 1950s.
The book by the leading historian of the Kaiser's navy reconstructs in detail the history of the creation, design, service and combat use of the squadron battleships of the Brandenburg class. The publication is illustrated with unique drawings and photographs.
