In the early 1970s, American Slavic scholars Ellendea and Carl Proffer founded Ardis Publishing House, which published books in Russian and in English translation that were not published in the USSR for censorship reasons. During one of their trips to the USSR, they met Joseph Brodsky. When the poet was deported from the country, it was Carl Proffer who, with great difficulty, secured him an entry visa to the United States and helped him find a university teaching position. Since 1977, all of Brodsky's Russian poetry books have been published by Ardis. The close relationship between Brodsky and the Proffers continued for many years. Before his death, Carl Proffer was working on memoirs that his widow wanted to publish, but at Brodsky's request, they never saw the light of day. Ellendea Proffer Teasley's own memoirs dedicated to Brodsky included fragments of Carl's notes. E. Proffer Teasley's memoirs are sometimes markedly polemical in nature; her admiration for Brodsky's poetic gift does not prevent her from soberly assessing some of the events and facts of his life.
