In the early 1970s, American Slavists Ellendea and Karl Proffer created the Ardis publishing house, where they printed books in Russian and translated into English that were not published in the USSR for censorship reasons. During one of their trips to the USSR, they met Joseph Brodsky. When the poet was expelled from the country, it was Karl Proffer who, with great difficulty, obtained for him an entry visa to the United States and helped him get a university teaching position. Since 1977, all of Brodsky's Russian books of poetry have been published in Ardis. Close relations between Brodsky and the Proffer family continued for many years. Before his death, Karl Proffer worked on memoirs, which his widow wanted to publish, but by Brodsky's will they never saw the light of day. In the memoirs of Ellendey Proffer Tisley, dedicated to Brodsky, included and fragments of notes by Carl. E. Proffer Tisley's memoirs sometimes have an emphasized polemical character; her admiration for Brodsky's poetic gift does not prevent her from soberly evaluating some events and facts of his life.
